Unlocking Deep Relaxation: the Power of Rhythmic Breathing on Brain Rhythms

A randomized controlled study conducted by University of Arizona researchers (now at Harvard) evaluated the effects of Sudarshan Kriya Yoga (SKY) versus a cognitive-based stress management intervention (Wisdom on Wellness – WOW) among university students. Results showed that SKY participants experienced significant improvements in perceived stress, sleep quality, social connectedness, distress, anxiety, depression, self-esteem, conscientiousness, and life satisfaction, while the control group showed no comparable gains. SKY practice also led to improved sleep and physiological stress reactivity, demonstrating its effectiveness as a breath-centered approach to enhancing mental health and well-being in young adults.
